Peter D. Ouspensky (1878 - 1947) was a Russian mathematician and esotericist known for his expositions of the early work of the Greek-Armenian teacher of esoteric doctrine George Gurdjieff, whom he met in Moscow in 1915. In A New Model of the Universe, P. D. Ouspensky analyzes certain of the older schools of thought - those of both the East and the West. He connects them with modern ideas and explains them in the light of recent discoveries and speculations in the realm of physics and philosophy. He explores relativity, the fourth dimension, Christian symbolism, the tarot, yoga, dreams, hypnotism, eternal recurrence, and various psychological theories. The book closes with a consideration of the sex problem from an entirely new point of view - that of sex in relation to the evolution of man toward superman. Ouspensky clearly shows how ordinary knowledge is not of sufficient substance to bring about the transformation in a new man, for knowledge is not knowledge unless the part is related to the whole. The ideas in this book serve to open the mind and inspire the reader to search out the company of those gathered together in the discovery of truth and (as Ouspensky himself did) seek an oral teaching in a school for human development, for it is not enough to read about these ideas and discuss them - they must be put into practice and actually lived.
